Officer Down Memorial

This page is dedicated to the Law enforcement officers in Hamilton County who lost their lives while serving and protecting our community.

Kenneth “Kenny” L. Fagel Jr. was born August 28, 1954.  He was a 1972 graduate of Haworth H.S. in Kokomo Indiana.  In August of 1973 he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as a Military Policemen until he was honorably discharged in August of 1976.  Kenny joined the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office in April of 1980 and served as a corrections officer until he was appointed to Deputy Sheriff in September of 1985.

Kenny’s untimely passing on March 19, 2003 left the Sheriff’s Office and the Law Enforcement community in Hamilton County with a huge void.  In the words of Captain Charles Murray, “God, Duty and Country were not idle words to Kenny”.  Kenny was proud to serve his Country through the Military and as a Deputy Sheriff.  Kenny was still active in the armed forces and continued to serve his Country as a Reserve up until his untimely passing.  Kenny proudly served his Country in Desert Storm.  Kenny was also proud to call himself a Deputy Sheriff.  Kenny would always arrive for work early with his uniformed pressed and his boots and brass shined.  No one ever wanted to be the one standing next to him at inspection.  Kenny was truly a mentor for junior officers and a role model for all.

Kenny was a family man.  Kenny loved his family and would often talk about his wife Cindy, his kids and his grandchildren with love and affection.  Kenny also loved his Law Enforcement Family.  In 2003, Sheriff Carter was looking for a motto for the Sheriff’s Office.  Kenny coined the phrase “Our Family Protecting Yours”.  Sheriff Carter loved the phrase and it continues to serve as the Sheriff’s Office motto today.

Kenny was also very active in the Fraternal Order of Police.  He was notorious for trying to sell a raffle ticket or recruit new members. He always made sure the young new Deputies knew the benefits of joining such a fine organization.  Kenny loved the lodge and the members loved him. Kenny served as President of the Hamilton County lodge for several years.Brother Fagel will always be our guardian angel, our partner on patrol.  He will be missed but never forgotten!

Francis W. Castor 28, died in the line of duty July 28th, 1948 while patrolling Forest Park in Noblesville on a motorcycle. Castor was a Noblesville Police officer for just 12 days when he was tragically killed.  Castor was a WWII Air Force veteran. The lodge was named after him and continues to be named today the Hamilton County "Francis Castor" Lodge # 103.
